Live in MD but work physically in FL. Do I have to pay MD state tax on my FL job?

Hello,

I live in MD but go to school and work part time in FL. My FL job didn't take out MD taxes. Did I screw up by not taking out MD taxes? If not, how can I correct this in turbo tax?

Thank you

It sounds like you were a MD resident. MD says if your permanent home (domicile) was in MD you were a MD resident and you must file a resident return.  Your resident state taxes you on all income from all sources.  Therefore if you did not have MD taxes withheld from your job in FL, you may owe taxes on that income when you file your tax return.  There is not a way to fix the past; you may owe MD tax on the income.

You did mention part-time job so your income may be below the MD filing/taxing threshold.  For single filing status the threshold is $12,950.  Click here for more information on filing requirements and residency status for MD.

However for tax year 2023 you should be sure to file a MD form MW507 with your employer as soon as possible to withhold MD state taxes if your expected income will be above the filing threshold.
