Is our Oregon state return using standard (like our federal) or itemized deductions?

  • We are using TurboTax Premier online for the first time, after using desktop Premier for several decades
  • We moved from CA to OR in 2025. We created the CA state tax return before starting OR
  • The federal taxes recommended we take the standard deduction. Because we are retired (income = SS + investment gains), the federal and CA state taxes say we owe $0. The "problem" is that the OR state return says we owe > $1800. I read OR has a very low standard deduction, so that is likely the cause.

My questions:

  1. How can I confirm if TurboTax is itemizing or using a standard deduction for the OR state return? The software didn't inform me which it is using, and online won't let me look at forms until I pay & submit (Desktop let me look at forms anytime, I understand why the limitation, but it negatively impacts me)
  2. How can I toggle the TurboTax OR state return between standard & itemized deductions so I can compare the bottom lines?

Thank you,

Craig

To check if the standard deduction is applied:

  1. While in your Oregon return, select Tax Tools from the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Tools, then choose View Tax Summary from the pop-up.
  3. In the black bar at the top, select OR Tax Summary.
  4. Look for the line Deductions.
    • If it matches $5,650 (Married Filing Jointly) or $2,825 (Single/MFS), it is using the Oregon Standard Deduction.
    • If the number is different, it is pulling from your federal itemized entries.

Oregon allows you to itemize on your state return even if you took the Standard Deduction on your Federal return. To compare or switch them in the Online version:

  1. Go back to the State Taxes tab and "Edit" or "Revisit" Oregon.
  2. Advance through the interview until you see a screen titled "Standard or Itemized?" or "Deduction Election"
  3. On this screen, TurboTax will show you its recommendation. You can manually select the "Itemized Deductions" radio button to see if it lowers your $1,800 balance.
  4. If you select Itemized, you will be prompted to enter or review your medical expenses, home mortgage interest, and charitable gifts specifically for Oregon.

Great info! It turns out TurboTax was already itemizing my OR return, so kudos to the software for optimizing and raspberries to my new state's tax code.  I still don't see any screen or dialogue in the OR state flow querying itemized vs standard (I've revisited many times), but given I can now confirm it is itemizing, that is no longer a concern. Maybe TurboTax hides the dialogue since my itemized deduction is significantly > than the $5650 standard.
