In previous years a state tax was included. Why not this year?

I was going to do my State tax, and it wants a payment of $40.00. It was always included in previous years.

What's Up with that!

We cannot see what tax software you are using. We do not know if you are using online or desktop. If you are using the CD/download----did you purchase Basic---which does not include state software? Or did you purchase Deluxe from a retailer who can be selling Deluxe with or without state?

If you are using online, the only time state is not an "extra" is if you are able to use the Free Edition. With all paid versions of the online software, you pay extra to prepare a state return.

Are you using the TurboTax Basic desktop CD/Download edition? If so, that edition does not include a free state download.

Or are you using the TurboTax Deluxe desktop CD/Download edition? If so, did you purchase the software from a retailer other than TurboTax? Many retailers will sell two different Deluxe editions, one with and one without the free state download. Look at the box that included the CD or go to the retailers website to see which edition you purchased.
