If I moved during 2016, can I claim sales tax for the time I lived in one state, and income tax for the time I lived in the other?

I lived in Texas (no income tax) for 8 months and Calfornia (lots of income tax) for 4 months.  Do I have to take income or sales tax for the full year, or can I split the election by residency?

Unfortunately, no. You have to choose between sales tax or state income taxes.

The election to either take the state and local sales tax deduction, or the state and local income tax deduction, as an itemized deduction on Schedule A of your federal return, is mutually exclusive - you must select one or the other.

You can claim an itemized deduction for state and local taxes paid in 2016, on Schedule A Line 5a.

To enter your state and local taxes paid into Turbotax, please see the following TurboTax FAQ, "Can I deduct taxes I paid for a prior tax year?":

Or alternatively, you can claim your actual state and local sales taxes paid, or state and local general sales taxes calculated on Schedule A Line 5b, based on an optional state and local sales tax table, found in the Form 1040 instructions.

TurboTax will calculate the maximum sales tax deduction available to you, based on your responses to the interview questions in the Sales Tax section.
