While filing an extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes due, you can file an extension for your federal return. This will all you to avoid the late-filing penalty.
If you decided to complete your return, you can send it in with an installment agreement that will allow you to make monthly payments for your balance due. You can also file an installment agreement at the IRS website- www.irs.gov/payments.
