I was out of the country approx 2 1/2 months, do I owe state (Kansas) and federal tax during this time frame ?

If you earned income in 2017, then you will need to file a federal and possibly a Kansas state tax return.  Depending on the amount of income you earned will determine your tax liability.

US citizens and residents are required to report all worldwide income.  To be exempt from paying taxes, you must be out of the country for a much longer time period.  Generally, this period is at least twelve months.
