I want to file my federal taxes on tax day, 4/17. But I want to file my state taxes now. I am due refunds from the states (NY & NJ) but owe on my fed. Can I online?

I also need to add a state. I don't see a place to do this.

Your state e-file will look to see if your Federal was accepted before it is processed. Therefore the best thing to do is to go ahead and e-file your Federal along with the states and then simply to remember to pay your Federal by 4/18 to avoid interest and penalty. Within the TurboTax program you can either set a "direct debit" to the IRS for 4/18 or log into the IRS's website and pay them directly on that date. This should enable you time to have gotten your state refunds as you are planning.

Use this link to make payment directly to the IRS: https://www.irs.gov/payments

To add a state to your return use the steps below:

  • Login to https://myturbotax.intuit.com/ with the same username
  • Click on My TurboTax in the white banner at the top
  • Below your 2016 status, click on Add a state under Some things you can do
  • Click on the State Taxes tab.
  • Click Continue to start or complete your state taxes.
