I paid more than 12 mortgage payments in 2017 to catch up on delinquent payments, can I claim all payments paid in 2017 on my taxes?

I had some delinquent payments from 2016 that I paid current during 2017, can I claim all payments made in 2017.  I've never filed an itemized return before because short form was the better option so I don't know if there will be any issues with me claiming mortgage payments for the first time especially since I paid more than 12 payments in the year.

You may claim the interest portion, but not the principal. Deductions are taken when they are paid.
