I paid $35k to the State of Iowa for repayment of Title XIX medical assistance under estate recovery law. Can this amount be used as a tax deduction?

If the assistance payments that you received were nontaxable, the repayment of those payments would not be deductible.

If the payments you received were taxable, you may be able to take a deduction for the repayment. Can you let me know whether these payments were taxable or not so that we can better assist you?
