You would be considered a Nonresident for the time you were in Arizona, so Part Year would apply for the time you were stationed in California. You would have to file the Parr Year return so only the California income is taxed.
Because your domicile (Home of Record) is California, you are a resident, and you pay tax on all income while permanently stationed in California. If you are stationed in another state, you are considered a nonresident and do not pay tax on the income earned in the other state.
So when I start my state, I don’t get the option for part time. I either have to do resident (which I would owe) or non resident (which I would get back). I don’t want to do the wrong choice and owe money later on
If you are using TurboTax online, go back to the Personal Info section and look for the screen below. You should then be able to go back to the State section and get the correct California Part Year resident return. @agroracing
So would this be correct?
thank you for your help with this.
Yes, that is correct. @agroracing
Just to be certain. When I change it to California it says I owe. When I change it to Arizona I’m owed taxes. It says where I was stationed The most time in 2024. Even though I moved to CA in March 2024, I would still leave it as Arizona?
Can you clarify if the Arizona and California wages are listed in Box 16?
I am checking to make sure entries work for your specific situation, I will tag you as soon as I have it sorted!
Yes, you will leave the Choose A Station Outside California as ARIZONA. Continue the Return answering the questions. You will be able to make the adjustment when you see the Nonresident Adjustments (see below). You will indicate the California Amount (as below). Please let me know if this does not work.
And note that if your only income in AZ was your military pay, then you do not have to file an AZ tax return unless AZ income tax was mistakenly withheld from your pay.
