I'm a video editor (side gig). Last year I began work on a project while living in Texas then moved to NY and completed the project. Do I pay state tax in NY?

-The payee lives in TX and is unaffiliated with any business, this was strictly a personal project for them.

-I will not receive a 1099. I know I must report this and am prepared to pay fed taxes. Just not sure if I need to pay NY state taxes since my project started in another state or if a portion will be subject to NY taxes.

All of the income is subject to Federal taxes.  On the side gig, you will pay taxes on the net profit (income less expenses related to earning that income.

On the NY return, you will show the income you earned while a NY resident.  You will file a part year NY resident return.  So if you for example you earned $5K, and while in NY approx 20% of this was earned, you will have $1,000 income subject to NY tax.

Thank you very much, Michael. That is what I had assumed.
