I'm a Kansas resident and received a 1099-MISC from an institution in Virginia that I did some mentoring. Do I need to file a Virginia tax form?

You have to file a VA state income tax return if all three below are true:

• you are a resident of Virginia, part-year resident, or a nonresident, and 
• you are required to file a federal income tax return, and
• you have Virginia adjusted gross income equal to or greater than the following amounts: Single or married filing separately $11,950 or Married filing jointly  $23,900.
