Your wife would file as a part-year resident in Illinois (reporting income earned while she was an IL resident), and a part-year resident in Ohio starting from the date she moved there. You would file as a full-year Ohio resident if you lived there the entire year.
So, I was filing jointly for my federal taxes and planning to file state taxes jointly too, so does it mean I need to file state taxes separately? Or can I file them jointly too? Also, I am not sure if you know, but how can I do that through Turbotax online?
Yes, you can file a federal return jointly. You can also file your Ohio return jointly if you were Ohio residents together at year-end. Your wife will need to file an Illinois part-year resident return reporting only the income she earned while living in Illinois. You generally don't need to file in Illinois unless you had Illinois-source income.
The software will ask you questions about the states you lived in, and if anyone on the tax return moved states. You should answer yes to this question and should be prompted to file an Ohio and Illinois return reporting the dates of residency.
For more information, see our help article about how to file if you moved to a different state during the tax year.
That was my understanding, we file federal jointly, and file ohio taxes jointly, but she will also has to file illinois state taxes for the income she earned in Illinois. Unfortunately, I was not able to do this separate filing in Turbotax online. It only asks if we were part-year resident(not specifying who), and its assuming that we both were Illinois residents and asking for our Illinois Drivers license and info and amount earned. I dont have Illinois DL, so not sure what I should even enter. I have spent hours trying to figure out how can I file state tax for my wife separately, i already paid for ohio and illinois state taxes subscription in turbotax lol
You can take the following steps as a workaround:
After filing, contact TurboTax Support to request a refund for the unused Illinois return that was originally attached to the joint federal filing.
