Yes. New York uses your income from all states and then it prorates using a formula/ratio to allocate the amount that is attributable to New York.
It does not apportion it out based on the actual dollars earned in each location but uses a percentage formula instead.
when i prorate, how do i accomplish this. I earned the ny income from jan-may. moved in Sept and earned maine income sept-dec
When you put the information into TurboTax that you are filing two part-year resident returns, the program ask you what income belongs to each state.
The questions are asked as you go through the information for each state to file the tax returns.
You fill in that information and then the program figures the tax for each state based on that information.
