I just filed a federal income tax extension, do i need to do the same for my WV state income taxes or does the federal cover both?

West Virginia automatically grants an extension if you filed a Federal extension as long as you do not owe state taxes. Otherwise a form must be filed with West Virginia to include your state tax payment.
