Can you clarify if you are trying to file a nonresident Massachusetts return? @choudhary-ro

You may need to change your PERSONAL INFORMATION in TurboTax.  Here are your steps.

  1. Go to Personal Info
  2. Find “State of Residence on December 31, 2025.”
  3. Change it to the state or country where you actually lived (NOT Massachusetts).
  4. Scroll to “Did you live in another state?”
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Choose Massachusetts and mark the dates you lived there in prior years only (if applicable).
  7. Scroll to “Other State Income”.
  8. When asked “Did you make money in any other states?” → Select Yes.
  9. Choose Massachusetts ONLY if you had MA‑source income (wages earned in MA, rental property in MA, etc.).
  10. If you had no MA‑source income, leave it unchecked.

Now enter your income that includes your social security.

  1. Go to Federal → Income & Expenses.
  2. Enter your Social Security under Retirement Plans & Social Security.
  3. TurboTax will automatically deem this as non‑taxable for MA.

Go to the State Section

  1. Select State Taxes.
  2. TurboTax will show Massachusetts as a state return.
  3. If it still shows Resident, click Edit.
  4. On the residency screen, choose:
  5. “Nonresident”
  6. TurboTax will automatically generate Form 1‑NR/PY
