You may need to change your PERSONAL INFORMATION in TurboTax. Here are your steps.
- Go to Personal Info
- Find “State of Residence on December 31, 2025.”
- Change it to the state or country where you actually lived (NOT Massachusetts).
- Scroll to “Did you live in another state?”
- Select Yes.
- Choose Massachusetts and mark the dates you lived there in prior years only (if applicable).
- Scroll to “Other State Income”.
- When asked “Did you make money in any other states?” → Select Yes.
- Choose Massachusetts ONLY if you had MA‑source income (wages earned in MA, rental property in MA, etc.).
- If you had no MA‑source income, leave it unchecked.
Now enter your income that includes your social security.
- Go to Federal → Income & Expenses.
- Enter your Social Security under Retirement Plans & Social Security.
- TurboTax will automatically deem this as non‑taxable for MA.
Go to the State Section
- Select State Taxes.
- TurboTax will show Massachusetts as a state return.
- If it still shows Resident, click Edit.
- On the residency screen, choose:
- “Nonresident”
- TurboTax will automatically generate Form 1‑NR/PY
