I have a Michigan drivers license, but haven't lived there for years. Yet it says I have to pay back taxes to the state of MI.

I was back for the summer of 2024. I made around $2,000 working some small jobs in the summer (2 months) before I got a job in another state. Says I would have to pay back taxes because of the other states I worked in. Do I even have to file or what, since I am single and made less than $3,000 in the state of MI? Just looking for some answers.

If you have not lived in MI for "years" ----why have you not established residence in some other state by getting a drivers license in whatever state you now live in?    You may have to find some ways to prove to MI that you have not lived in the state if they are coming after you for back taxes.

Have you been a student who was claimed as a dependent by parents who still live in MI?   Have you worked in other states while being claimed as a dependent in MI?  Please explain.   We need to know some details in order to come up with suggestions for how you need to handle this.

What state do you live in. And what have you done to establish residency there.

Unless you live in a reciprocal state (Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota), and were a resident of that state for the whole year, you owe tax to Michigan on the income earned there.

What does "pay back taxes because of the other states I worked in" mean.

I work in a profession where I have the possibility of moving every year or so. For instance, in the last 3 years, I have lived in 4 different states. Kind of hard to try and get residency in all those areas when it has just been for a year stent. I lived in Maryland all of last year and currently live in Virginia.

You need to select a DOMICILE and make sure you take all the necessary steps to establish and maintain or abandon as needed.  If Michigan contacted you, I am sure you have seen Form 3799, Statement to Determine State of Domicile.  You should review it carefully.  If you did have Michigan resident status, you would have to report all income to Michigan and be able to claim the credit for the taxes you paid to other states.  If not, start gathering the evidence to show where you are domiciled.  @kylehouts07
