I am up to the "What was your state of residence in 2017?" question, and I my residence is NYS, but I go to school in Virginia and make money in VA. What should I put?

You should put New York unless you have made steps to make VA your domicile.  

Domicile is where you intend to return or where you call home.  Going to school and working part-time in a state where you go to school does not change your domicile unless you make the change to your domicile by taking steps like getting a VA drivers license, registering your car in VA, registering to vote in VA, buying land, etc.
