I am taking the standard deduction. Please explain why my Alabama state tax refund drops as I add my federal deductions.

What deductions are you adding in? And have you finalized your Alabama return yet?

The refund counter just takes into account the items that have been entered so far. Until you go through your state return and finalize it it is difficult to know whether the system has taken everything into account yet.

....an it could be that your AL taxes owed is dropping, not your refund.
