How to retrieve 2016 Federal and VA State Tax Returns on TurboTax website that were filed in April 2017.

You have to sign onto your 2016 online account using the exact same user ID you used to create the 2016 online account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one).  Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the user ID's for an email address.  Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your 2016 account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "Try something else"

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

To access your prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you still cannot access your account, you can contact TurboTax customer service/support through their contact website during business hours.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for a contact link and hours of operation - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/3401489

Submit your question/problem during business hours and then use the option for Call (a phone number will be provided for Call) to speak directly with a TurboTax agent -

Note:  The Call option will not be available when TurboTax Support is closed.

Support can also be reached by messaging them on these pages https://www.facebook.com/turbotax/ and https://twitter.com/TeamTurboTax

Thank you for your quick response back to my questions. Also, I read on the IRS website that we had 7 years to file back returns for Federal Returns and can receive refunds from the IRS up to 7 years. Can you please advise me on this or tell me where to find this information?

Thank you and have a great day!

Where did you see 7 years?  This says you only have 3 years to file for a refund.

Not sure where you saw 7 years to file a tax return for a federal tax refund on the IRS website.

The requirement is that you have 3 years from the original due date of the tax return to file for a federal tax refund.

Go to this IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/dont-lose-your-refund-by-not-filing

And this IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/filing-past-due-tax-returns

Also see the amended tax return Form 1040X instructions page 3 - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf#page=3

Generally, for a credit or refund, you must file Form 1040X within 3 years (including extensions) after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
