How to get state tx # for CA. Never asked for before & no tax taken out.

Took a RMD from a financial company & got a 1099-R.  Turbo Tax asking for State ID & says abbreviation is invalid.  Box 13 is blank on 1099-R as no state tax was withheld.

It is the federal employer identification number that must be included on every information return according to the Internal Revenue Service.

However, the TurboTax program will require you to enter a state number. Either you can enter the federal identification number (in the state's format), or you can create one and include any spaces or hyphens when applicable (e.g. CA 80486884 or in this format CA 000-0000-0)  This should allow you to continue completing your tax return.
