How to efile old new York taxes

I'm confused how to file taxes with TurboTax for 2021.

I am supposed to file federal by mail and new York electronically.

If i choose "file by mail" i got error saying new York taxes have to be efiled.

But when i chose "efile" it than proceeds to efile BOTH my federal and state taxes.

How do I tell TurboTax to file federal and efile NY? (When i try to skip federal i got error saying "new York requires taxes to be efiled together with federal")

Sorry you can't efile a prior year return from Turbo Tax neither federal or state.  Just ignore the efile or error messages.  And for the current year you can only efile New York if your software allows it.   And in Turbo Tax you can only efile state if you efile federal first.   So if you didn't file federal or mailed it or already used the 5 efiles then Turbo Tax won't allow more efiles.   

Just checking, you are using the Desktop installed program to do 2021, right?  Online is only for 2022.

New York requires you to e-file your NY return IF "your software supports the electronic filing of your return." TurboTax does not support electronic filing of your NY return if you file your federal return by mail. Therefore you are not required to e-file your NY return. File the New York return by mail.

@jamroz No one can e-file a 2021 tax return using do-it-yourself tax software from TurboTax.  You need to mail your 2021 NY return.

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns.    If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed.   It has to be mailed.   It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.
