How do I manage paying taxes in Maryland for part-time work, but not my from my federal salary?

I am a Federal Employee working overseas. My home state is NV, which does not have a state tax. However, I also work part time for the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) as an adjunct professor and receive an income.  How do I file taxes in Maryland but not in NV?

Under the Personal Info tab, you will see an option for “Other State Income” towards the bottom of the overview screen. In this section, you will indicate that you made money in Maryland. The fact that you are not taxed in your resident state doesn’t impact your ability or need to file a tax return with another state. Turbo Tax will recognize that you do not need to file Nevada.

First, ensure that your federal/ worldwide entries have been completed. When you are finished preparing your federal return, click on the State Taxes tab. You should receive an initial message that Nevada Doesn't Require You to File a State Return”. Because you still have to file Maryland, click “Choose State”.

If you received a W2 from the University, and Maryland income/ taxes withheld are indicated in boxes 15-17 of that form, your entries in the Federal income section should flow over automatically. The program should also recognize that you are a Nonresident of Maryland in the initial state screens. If it does not, ensure that you change it to Nonresident.

There are numerous areas in the Maryland interview that you may need to visit, depending on the complexity of your return. However, assuming you are a W2 employee, the principal screen to allocate your wages is titled, “Maryland Wage Income”. The MD amount should pull from the federal W2, boxes 15-17. If not, please edit or add the wages earned from Maryland sources.

Continue through the return and answer any other questions that arise.
