Do you mean you worked for someone and they paid you with a personal check instead of paying with a payroll check with tax and FICA withheld? Then you worked as an independent contractor and will need to pay self-employment tax.

Are you saying you received income from personal checks? What did you receive the checks for? If it was for self employment, did you also receive 1099-MISC forms from the person or persons who paid you?
