I was a full time student in Ohio for January 2017 through May 2017, and continued to live and work there through July 2017. My address on record with my college was in California, but the only time I spent in California was to visit for a week or two through out the year, and did not work there at all. I moved to NY with the intention of making it my home in August, and have continued to live here through December 2017.
I only worked in OH and NY, and would consider myself a part year resident of those two states and a nonresident of CA. Is that correct? I am having difficulty determining my partial residency and non-resident status for these states, especially as I am filing as a nondependent and most questions about this seem to be asked by parents of students that are dependents.

Yes, you are correct. One caveat, since you are considered a NY resident, the OH return needs to be completed first.
