Rule of thumb, for your situation: do the state you currently live in last.
I have done that, but Montana (state I moved from) needs tax amount paid to Idaho to complete. Idaho needs tax due and paid to Montana to complete. Not sure how to proceed.
I'm not specifically familiar with MT software. Bur the usual question is what income is being double taxed. You enter 0, because you going to handle the double tax issue on the other (ID in your case) state return.
Thank you, that did help. Now I just need to figure out what I put in the box for "Idaho tax paid". Can't get that until I complete Idaho and can't complete Idaho until I know "tax due and paid to Montana". Any suggestions?
Again, based on the other states that I'm familiar with (and not MT specifically), you would enter 0 there too. The software needs those two numbers (income double taxed and tax paid on the double taxed income) to calculated the credit for tax paid to the other state. You're not claiming that on the MT return.
If you claim it, at all, you will claim it on the ID return. That said, that credit is unusual for a situation where you moved from one state to the other. Your MT source income most likely stopped when you moved.
