How can I tell if my state income taxes have been deducted from my federal taxable income? I see the line for property taxes but not state income taxes.

How can I tell if my state income taxes have been deducted from my federal taxable income? I see the line for property taxes but not state income taxes.

You can see the state income taxes on Schedule A line 5a. Please be aware that because of the new tax law the State, local, real estate, and personal property taxes deduction is capped at $10,000. Also, if your Itemized Deduction wasn't more than the Standard Deduction then TurboTax will use the Standard Deduction. If you are able to itemize it will carry over to Form 1040 line 8 otherwise the Standard Deduction will show on line 8.

Standard Deduction 2018:

  • Single - $12,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $12,000 add $1,300 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $24,000 add $1,300 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $18,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older

Possible itemized deductions are:

  • Medical and dental costs above and beyond 7.5% of your AGI
  • State, local, real estate, and personal property taxes (capped at $10,000)
  • Home mortgage interest
  • Charitable donations and gifts
