Homes in Florida and North Carolina, which state should be our legal residence?

I am moving from Texas to join my wife in Florida, which is her legal residence. We also own a home in North Carolina where we spend considerable time together or separately. I need to establish residency in either FL or NC. Which state should it be? Do my wife and I need to have the same legal residence?

TX and FL have no state income tax while NC does. Your state of residency will be where you call home. You vote, drivers license, car insurance, etc all come from the state where you intend to always come back from time away. Only you know which state is your true home.

You and your wife do not have to have the same legal residence but it can make things simpler.
