Hello! I'm from the US but have lived in Europe for two years. I didn't reside or earn any money in my original USA state during 2021. How should I file state taxes?

Which should I choose? What was your state of residence in 2021?
- Just STATE.
- I had more than one state of residence.
- I made money in STATE last year, but I never lived there.

It will depend on which state you lived in before you moved to Europe. What state did you live in before you moved?

Most states will allow you to be released from your residency status if you can prove that you had residency somewhere else for more than six months of the year. If you lived in a state that released you from your residency status you will select "Foreign or US Possession" in the "My Info" section.

If you lived in a state that has not released you from your residency status you will select just the state in the "My Info" section. During the state interview, you will only select the state since you didn't make earn any money in the state.

Virginia is one of the states that requires you to file when living abroad please see VA residency rules for details.
