I moved from Virginia to North Carolina last May. Started a new job in June and filed my taxes two days ago and got 1400 dollar return but owed North Carolina 2000 dollars? I’m confused about this. My buddy who has lived in NC for a year makes a little bit more than I do and got refunded 300 dollars and didn’t owe anything. He didn’t have any tax write offs either and neither did I. Is this because I was a part year resident and didn’t pay in what was needed for my salary? I’m just confused. I have 4% paid towards state taxes pulled out of my paycheck if that helps.

It is hard to say without seeing the tax returns.
You should have filed as a part-year resident for both the Virginia and North Carolina state income tax returns. On their part-year tax return, some states will reduce your standard deduction by the percentage of your income was earned in the other state.
In the North Carolina state income tax return, carefully review the screen Wages Allocation to make sure that the correct income was reported to each state.
Hello I did put part time resident and made sure wages were accurate. I was just surprised that I ended up having to pay in when my friend makes a little bit more than me and got 300 back. Could being a part year resident my first year in NC be the reason I had to pay?
The reason you owed North Carolina income tax may be due to not having had enough NC tax withheld from your wages.
If you W-2 did not have NC tax withholding shown in Boxes 15 and 17 or did not have enough tax withheld to cover the wages you earned when you lived in NC, that could result in you owing income tax to NC for 2025.
