Hello,
I used the IRS free Turbo Tax to file. Since I am am a Postmates driver, I filed as an independent contractor and owed a few hundred dollars because no wages were withheld. This seems normal...
When the data was transferred to the state taxes (California) it showed a return of $200. Is this conceivable? I combed through everything several times but found no errors, but since no taxes were withheld I don't understand why the state would be giving me a return?

It is conceivable because of refundable credits that you may have qualified to receive.
If you do not owe taxes or have to file, you may be able to get a refund.
If you qualify for tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, you can receive a refund even if you paid no taxes. To claim the credits, you have to file your 1040 and other tax forms.
