Please enter your foreign earned income following these steps, Do I need to report foreign income? You can choose to do the foreign earned income exclusion or you can take the foreign tax credit.
Form 1116-Foreign tax credit allows $1400 per child for refundable credit plus can have IRA, don't have to count days out of US, can take housing exclusion but then lose refundable child tax credit
Form 2555- Foreign earned income exclusion- don’t get child tax credit, don't get IRA
Hi AmyC, (Employee Tax Expert) I think we have a miss understanding. The reporting of the Foreign Income works just fine. it is the 1040 that is giving me problem. I'm an Expat Living and working Overseas. I don't have a W-2 because I work for a foreign company. So I make the selection that I don't have a W-2 . I've filled out the Block for Foreign earned Income out and qualify for the exclusion. (Congratulations ! Your foreign earned income exclusion is $ 50,000. You will not pay taxes on this amount.) When I get to the Review Section I get the message. Not Eligiable for Electronic FilingIt looks like you have a tax situation in your federal return that makes it ineligiable for e-filing Here are the details:all of the following lines of Form 1040 have zero valueLine 9Line 11Line 16Line 18Line 21Line 24Line 33Don't worry even though you are unable to e-file your return, we'll still help you file your return. So my question and problem is . How do I fill out the zero lines on the 1040 so that I may e-file my return. Or is that not possible ? I have been filing for years from over here with just filling out the forms and sending them in. A friend of mine does his every year as an Expat like me. He uses turbotax and he recomened it to me. It works for him with no problems at all. He has tried to help me with this problem also. We can't seem to get any farther. Why doesn't it work for me. What am I doing wrong ? Please help me on this.I've tried to enter Screen Shots but they would not copy into this message format. Thank You Rich K
The reason why the program won't let you efile is you have no taxable income to report after you took your exclusion. I have a solution that may work in the meantime so you can electronically file. Let me know if this works.
Hello,
Did you manage to sort this out? I am having a similar problem.
@Rebecca7a The solution provided by @DaveF1006 should work just fine. Just put in an amount of incidental income that is not taxable but does change one of the numbers in the return from zero to something. That will allow you to efile.
