I respectfully disagree with your answer. Mostly because TurboTax did NOT calculate the LTC Premium available as a Virginia deduction, I had to do that manually. I also suspect if I had selected the Standard Deduction that TurboTax would not have offered a choice of deduction on the Virginia return at all. And partly because you did not really answer the question I asked when you began, "if you did not enter..." My question implies that I've already entered the information in the Federal section (and wondering why the State section didn't do the math for what is deductible in Virginia).
The better answer would be, "No, TurboTax does not automatically calculate the amount of LTC premium you can deduct on a Virginia return, it only offers you the space to input the amount yourself. The amount should be the difference between the LTC premium paid and the federal maximum LTC premium allowed."
Because the help function didn't really answer this question I needed to verify the answer with the Virginia Dept. of Taxation customer help line and manually verify the entry amount was correctly reflected on my return. Two extra steps that TurboTax can eliminate by updating the software, please.
Yes, if you did not enter the long term care premiums in the federal section, or are not itemizing, TurboTax will automatically fill this part so you can add any amounts you paid to get the state deduction.
