Primary residence is NC. Husband did a small job for a VA company and received a W2 for $1062. We are filing NC taxes, but I'm hoping some can clarify. Do we need to file VA taxes being that our TOTAL federal income is above the married filing jointly limit listed for VA, or is it only if our VA income is above that amount that a return for the additional state needs to be filed? Would VA adjusted gross income be only what we made in VA?

If any Virginia state taxes were withheld, then you do need to file a Virginia tax return.
Based on the income amount you shared and the fact that only one of you had Virginia income, you would not need to file a non-resident Virginia return unless it was to get a refund of taxes withheld.
See the Virginia Instructions for Non-Resident Returns Form 763 for reference.
Hi, thank you for the reply! So to clarify, if anything was withheld I need to file in VA, but not as a nonresident?
You can file the Virginia return as a non-resident to get the tax withheld in Virginia refunded. However, you aren't required to file it, it is optional.
