Do I need to file a separate state return for work I did in another state even if I was not paid by an entity from that state?
I am a freelance musician who lives and works in California. Last year, I did two jobs out of state however I was not paid by entities from those states. Do I need to file a state return for those states in addition to my California return? Below are the detailed scenarios:
- I did one job in Idaho but was paid by a production company in California, so on paper it may appear I did the work in California. I filled out a W-4 and this income already had federal and California tax withheld.
- I did another job in Wyoming but was paid by an individual who lives in Texas. I did not fill out a W-4 or a W-9 thus no taxes were withheld and it is not being directly reported to the IRS. This is self-employment income I plan to claim on my Schedule C.
If it is worth mentioning, the jobs each paid less $600.
I know that this may be small potatoes but I imagine the IRS doesn't care how big or small I think it is...I would just like to know the proper thing to do 🙂 Any clarity or suggestion is much appreciated!

Idaho nonresidents must file an Idaho income tax return if their gross income from Idaho sources is more than $2,500.
Wyoming is one of the few U.S. states that doesn’t charge an income tax. Not only that, they are one of the even fewer that don’t levy taxes on corporate income, retirement income or on intangible assets such as stocks and bonds.
Why would I have to file a nonresident state return?https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/4777207
