Nonresidents of CA are required to file if you have both of the following:
If you are required to file in CA, you will have to report income earned in CA as CA source income on a CA nonresident state income tax return.
Usually, you will get a state tax credit in AZ for CA state taxes paid on your nonresident CA state income tax return.
However, AZ does NOT allow a state income tax credit for taxes paid to CA. (Please refer to the following link for more information about the availability in AZ of a tax credit for taxes paid to another state: https://azdor.gov/Portals/0/ADOR-forms/TY2014/10100/10136_inst.pdf )
So for your particular circumstances, you will actually need to prepare your AZ resident state income tax return first. You will then prepare your CA nonresident state income tax return and take a state tax credit on your CA nonresident state income tax return for any AZ taxes paid on this CA source income on your AZ resident state income tax return.
