Do I have to file a state return if there's nothing on it?

If you do not need to file a state return you can remove it. Using the CD/Download click on File then Remove State Return. If you are using Forms Mode, to the left of the page you will see Forms in My Return. Scroll down to the state part and click the state then click Delete From.
