How to determine income amount for a part time resident state when taxes were withheld for a different state only?

I lived in two states in 2017. The income earned was only taxed for the state in which I moved to.  How do I determine how much income to claim for the state I moved from? I lived in Colorado from 1/2017 to 6/2017 and moved to Idaho 6/2017 to present. Money earned from the Idaho based job started in 3/2017. I was unemployed prior. I have income taxed for Idaho while still in Colorado. How would I go about calculating income earned while living in Colorado since my W2 only withheld Idaho state tax?  Would I go by my pay stub at the time of my move to determine income amount earned while living in Colorado?

Colorado will tax your income for the part of the year you were a Colorado resident, basically your income for January through May.

You can either go by your last pay stub before you moved, or this calculation:

  • In 2019 you worked at the job for 10 months total (March - December).
  • Of those 10 months you worked, you lived in CO for 3 months (March - May).
  • So the CO percentage is .3 or 30% [3/10]
  • Your CO income is the total x .3
