Cannot amend 2024 and 2023 Tax return as it redirects to 2025 Tax return page

Hi,

I am trying to amend the 2023 and 2024 Tax return. I went to Tax Home -> Tax returns and docs -> Amend (change) 2024 return -> Start an amendment online

It redirects me to my 2024 filing where I make my changes and therefore it updates the 2024 Taxes due.

Now when I click continue here, it just redirects me back to 2025 tax return tab so I am unable to amend my 2024 return. I tried for 2023 too and the same issue happens.

I have tried incognito, clearing cache etc. My 2024/2023 tax returns were all accepted in their respective years and it definitely seems like some Turbo Tax software issue.

You can initiate an amended return using TurboTax Online. Generally, as of March, 2026, you can e-file your amended 2025, 2024, or 2023 federal return via TurboTax if your original return was also e-filed in TurboTax.

On the Tax Home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.

Select the Amend (change) return dropdown, then Amend using TurboTax Online. If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop instead.

Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

If you are having trouble with the process, try logging out of TurboTax, restarting your device, and logging in again. Try using a different browser.

Yeah, basically Amend only works via Turbo Tax Desktop and not on Online at all (issue has been there forever as seen from other posts).

Best thing is I have to pay another 45$ to use the desktop version since my 2024 filing had CA and NC state both even though I don't want to amend my NC tax returns.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines. 

• You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. 
• You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. 
• Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.  
• The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due 
• Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected. 
• You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

1. My return was accepted last year. I am able to amend via desktop but not via online (since it redirects me to 2025) . I had a live screen sharing session with a tax expert and they couldn’t understand what was going on as well and just suggested to file by paper myself.

2. I am using the same account which I used last year.

3.Yes I see my original return, as shared in screenshots above. It just doesnt let me submit as it redirects me to 2025 tax at the file button.

4.Yes, this only works for desktop version and doesnt work online at all.

5. While true, desktop version requires me to download all states from previous tax return filing. So it downloads federal, CA and NC.

6.Yep, I understand that. 2024 tax comes within 3 year period.

Issue at the end is:

1. Turbo tax online amend doesnt work since it redirects me to from 2024 amend to 2025 tax filing. There are multiple posts about signing out/redirecting happening in both Turbo tax community and reddit.

2. Turbo tax desktop version lets me amend but since it requires downloading all federal, CA and NC software, it charges me 45$ extra to do amendment (even though I paid for original filing cost).

I can live with paying that money and being able to file but I would be curious to hear from anyone who has actually been able to use amend using Turbo Tax Online for PREVIOUS years (since it really seems like it doesnt work for multiple people without any explanation)

Hi,
I have the same issue as you where I try to amend the 2024 return online and it redirects me to the 2025 return when trying to finalize the amended return.

I assume it's a TT bug where they have not considered the case that somebody started the 2025 return when amending the 2025 return.

I would like to find out how you amended the return using the desktop version?
I tried that and am facing these issues:
1. When I select 'amend return' in the desktop version, I don't see a way to import my tax file and have to start with an empty slate.
2. When I import my tax file, I don't see a way to amend the return. 
Perhaps I'm missing something. Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Hi,

For me, I did the following:

1. Downloaded the desktop version from the amend section in the tax home tab on TT Online.

2. When I installed the TT desktop, it asked me to import tax by connecting to TT online ( I am assuming you must have filed with TT last year too?)

3. After that, it realized it needs to download certain forms based on your tax return.

4. Once you do that, it should just use your tax document and I think next tab should show why you are using this (e.g.for amend, for something else).

5. When you do that, it should make the tax due on top to 0. Any changes you make should reflect the state and federal tax accordingly.

NOTE: Every year would have a different TT desktop version so for 2024 you need to have that one. Thats why I downloaded it how step1 mentions.

If you used TurboTax Online in 2024, and now want to amend using TurboTax Desktop, you need to purchase the 2024 desktop program, and download a copy of your 2024 online return to open in the 2024 product. 

Once you download a copy of your .tax2024 file from online, open the 2024 desktop program and transfer the downloaded file to start your Amendment.

Hi there -

Piggy backing on this as I have a similar question. I need to amend for 2023 and 2024, I originally filed via TurboTax online but have now also downloaded the Desktop versions just to be safe.

When I open the .tax file for prior year in the desktop version and make the changes, it only seems to be creating another full filing with the updated data, not actually providing a 1040-X form.

How can I ensure I get a 1040-X form created? Is this something I have to do manually instead? And can you confirm if I am able to submit via eFile or it has to be printed and mailed?

When you open the desktop program, the screen will be titled Continue your 2024 Tax Return (or 2023 tax return if using the 2023 program).  If your return isn't present on the screen, you can click on Continue from TurboTax Online to download your .Tax file from your online account.

Once you have your .Tax file downloaded, you can scroll down on the Continue your 2024 Tax Return page to where you will see Need to Amend a Filed Return?  You can then click on Amend a Filed Return to get started.

If you started to make changes to your return before clicking on Amend a Filed Return, you will need to undo the changes you made to get the data on your return back to the original return.  As an alternative, you can download the .Tax file from you online account once again to get the data for your original return,

Once you finalize your amended returns for 2023 and 2024, they will need to be mailed in.  Only amendments for 2025 tax returns can be e-filed at this time.

Desktop version suggests to mail but  does not redirect you to downloading the form. To download it, you can check top right on turbo tax desktop under forms section and then there should be a 1040X which you can download.

Also, I was able to use Turbo Tax Online to efile my amend for 2024 return only after filing my 2025 tax return. You can also efile for 2023 using turbo tax online, just make sure to complete 2025 return first. If you are doing by desktop, you would have to mail it. Be sure to include updated 1040 and any changed schedules along with 1040X when mailing.

Thanks for this response - just to confirm, you are recommending using TurboTax Online or Desktop for the amend forms? 

I will go ahead and file 2025 tonight, then can try to eFile the amendment after. I still just have not been able to find the 1040-X form either in desktop or online, so just trying to get really clear where to find this especially to eFile.

If you're using TurboTax Online, after you file your 2025 return, scroll down to 'Tax Returns and Doc' from the home page, and select 2024 and 'Amend'.  The 1040X is created at that time.  After you finished entering your changes, go to Tax Tools > Tools in the left-side menu, and 'View Tax Summary' from the pop-up menu.  

Back at the left-side menu, choose 'Preview My 1040' to scroll through your amended return.
