Can't E-file state taxes when I select direct debit, says I need to pay by check to E-file

I'm ready to file and selected direct debit for the state taxes I owe (Utah). When I go to file my state taxes are marked as "File Later" and when I attempt to change this message appears:

File by mail is not available because you have selected to pay balance due with direct debit. If you want to file by mail, you must go back and choose a different method to pay your taxes.

E-file is not available because you have selected to pay balance due with direct debit. If you want to E-file, please update your payment method to Check.

Can I not do direct debit and E-file my state taxes?

If it won't let you use Direct Debit for state (some states don't allow that) then say you will mail a check.  Then you can probably pay directly online on your state's website.
