I live in NJ but work in NYC. I got married this year. For some reason, my employer took it upon themselves to change my marital status and exemptions on my W4 (but kept my NJ-W4 and NY IT-2104 as Single and Exemptions as Table A and 2). They apologized and told me to submit updated forms. This is what it says on my latest paycheck statement now, in bold red:
Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly
Exemptions/Allowances:
Federal: Standard Withholding Table, $150 Extra Withholding
Additional Tax Withholding Information
Taxable Marital Status:
NJ: Single
NY: Single
Exemptions/Allowances
NJ: Table A
NY: 2
EFFECTIVE THIS PAY PERIOD YOUR FEDERAL EXEMPTIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED FROM 2 TO 0.
I'm actually okay with this turnout. Come filing time next year, would the fact that my pay statements say both "Single" and "MFJ" cause me trouble with the IRS? Thank you!

I posted it twice. I'm still getting the hang of this site. If you or anyone else has an answer to my question, I would appreciate it. Thank you! 🙂
