Calculation of senior bonus

The senior bonus calculation is only using $6,000 rather than $12,000 for join filers.  All age and SS are correct.

The fields below line 35 are frozen, so I cannot correct.

Calculation of senior bonus

Were you both 65 years old or older at the end of 2025? Which line are you seeing the credit on?

If eligible you will find this on Schedule 1-A Part V and line 13b of your form 1040.  There would be nothing to correct below line 35. TurboTax will automatically calculate it based on your date of birth and your income.  There is not a special section or box to check.  Just enter your correct information and TurboTax will take it from there.

For Tax Year 2025 through 2028, seniors may claim an additional deduction of $6,000 per taxpayer over 65.  This is NOT a refundable credit.  This is a deduction of your income.

  • If your income is above $75,000 ($150,000 if Married filing jointly) the bonus deduction decreases by $.06 for every dollar over the relevant amount.
  • This deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
  • If your filing status is married filing separately you are not eligible for this deduction.
  • This bonus deduction is ONLY for those over 65, it does not apply to those who are blind and under 65.  You must be 65 by the end of the tax year to claim the senior bonus.

Note, this is a deduction NOT a credit.  That means that it can help lower your taxable income, but it will not lower your taxable income below $0.  So if your taxable income was $0, you would not see a change in tax due or your refund with the credit.

Does not answer my question.  Rather than deducting $12,000 from Part V line 35, it is calculting using only $6,000, resulting in $0 on line .

Deduction $6,000.          $12,000

Line 35  $ 7,338                  7,338

Equals $0.                s/b.    $4,662

@user17715252288 Check the personal information you entered.  Make sure that you selected Married and that you wanted to include your spouse with the tax return (MFJ).  Check the DOB for the both of you, the DOB must be before January 2, 1961 for each of you.

All of the information is correct.  I even edited and re input birth dates which were 1946 and 1950 hoping it would fix any problem and no adjustment was made to the calculation.

I created a return to double check the program. My lines 36 a and b are showing correct. Since you have checked your entries, you could have a piece of data stuck or you may need to contact support.

Follow these steps to be sure it isn't a data issue.

Desktop version:

  1. Clear the birthday entry to be sure there isn't a ghost entry and re-enter it.
  2. Save your return while closing the program.
  3. Update the program
  4. Open

Online version:

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

For stuck information follow these steps:

  1. Clear the birthday entry to be sure there isn't a ghost entry and re-enter it.
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.

It may be time to contact support. Your form should be showing lines 36a and b with $6,000 each. This is from the return I made up -Senior deduction sch 1A.png
