CA's system is a mess right now, so we sent the unemployment repayment check to an address we were told to, but got no confirmation. Can I count this as having repaid?

We got a 1099-G in the main, however we never received a notice of overpayment (however, unequivocally, we know we were fully overpaid, so we spent none of it). We messaged unemployment online and after 6 months, they finally messaged back. But that's all we were able to ascertain as it relates to details on how to return the money.

Normally a mail date is sufficient but at this point, they really should have cashed the check. If you have proof of mailing it, that might be sufficient evidence.

If the amount is over $3,000 you can claim a credit for it anytime. If less than $3,000, I would be concerned that they should have received it.

What would count as proof of mailing? Photographs? Having sent it with a tracking number via UPS or USPS?

Sending it using UPS or USPS with a tracking number and receipt that shows when it was mailed and when it received will give you the proof you need that it was sent.
