CA Form 540 NR - VT resident attending college in CA with both earned and unearned income

Hi,

I am a resident in Vermont as is my college aged daughter.

My daughter attends college in California and had a part time job there.  I know she has to file a non-resident CA return for the income earned in CA.  She however also has unearned income.  Because of this, it is asking for  all kinds of info off of my CA form 540 etc..  I don't file in CA so therefore don't have any of these forms.  Her unearned income is already getting hit with the kiddie tax on her Federal return as well as her Vermont return since that is her state of residence.    Do I just enter zeros on her CA return where they are asking for my information??

Thank you

CA Form 540 NR - VT resident attending college in CA with both earned and unearned income

If none of the unearned income is California-sourced, and you are not going to file a nonresident California return, then you can enter zeros in the sections of California Form 3800 Tax Computation for Certain Children with Unearned Income that ask what you entered on your nonresident California return.

In the alternative, you can delete the Form 3800 as follows:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits.
  3. In the left-side menu, select Tax Tools, then Tools.
  4. Select Delete a form, from the list in the pop-up window.
  5. Check the list for Form 3800, under the California return, select Delete next to the form.
  6. Confirm your Delete, select Continue.
  7. Select Continue with my return.
  8. Select Review and Check my return.
