I live in NJ and work for a company in NY city. I received a letter in the beginning of March 2020 from NYS stating that I need to prove my NJ residency. I assumed this was a random type of audit. So after submitting the documentation needed I waited the two weeks before calling to see what the outcome was. Now to be clear I have been working from home for this same company since 2006 and always filed the non-resident tax form for NY every year. Also I have been at my current address since June 2015 and never had an issue when filing. However NYS has made the decision that somehow I’m a NY resident and therefore my refund has been slashed from $2756 to $929! How do I go about appealing this? The information they are basing this decision on is completely wrong!

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE
TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.

AUDIT SUPPORT
TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support. At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support". Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter. Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

Were you informed of that decision in a letter? If so, letters of that type almost always contain instructions on how to appeal.
