2018 F/T resident in new state (CO) for 1y. No earned income from CA. 100% unearned income for past 2 yrs. Why am I considered partial-year resident?

TurboTax is requiring that I download CA state tax sw.  I cannot proceed in completing CO taxes.

If the unearned income is from California, then you would need to file as a nonresident. If the unearned income is NOT from California, there is no need to file with that state.

This is what California states:

  • Nonresidents of California - Taxed only on income from California sources.
