1099-R State tax withholding

My IRA distribution had NJ State tax withheld but NJ does not tax retirement.  Turbo Tax only has place to enter the Gross Distribution amount but not the withheld.  Do I lose that amount?

if your screen does not conform with the 1099-r, you are entering it in the wrong place.

1099-R State tax withholding

Find your Form 1099-R in TurboTax by entering 1099-R in the search bar or go back to your Income Summary under your Federal Income Tax Return and it will be under Retirement Plan Income.

If there is no Form 1099-R there, you may have been entering it in the wrong place.

You should be able to enter your NJ state withholding on your Form 1099-R in TurboTax which will flow to your NJ state tax return and be refunded to you through your state tax return.

You'll enter it on the 1099-R screen by clicking:

  •  Federal Taxes, then Wages & Income
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security IRA
  •  401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  • Follow the prompts
  • You'll come to the screen where TurboTax asks you to enter the 1099-R information, and you'll see boxes 12-14 near the bottom
  • This is where you'll enter the state information from the 1099-R, and box 12 specifically is for "State Tax Withheld."
