You can only enter on a 2022 tax return those tax payment you made in 2022.  Payments made in 2021 can only be entered on a 2021 tax return.

Please explain exactly what you are trying to do.

In your federal return?  You paid a 2021 state tax due or estimated payment in Jan 2022 for the 2021 4th quarter state?

Enter it under
Federal Taxes (or Personal for H&B)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Income Taxes Paid - Click the Start or Update button

Next page scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2022
Balance due on your 2021 State taxes paid in 2022
or Payments for 2021 or a prior year state or local paid in 2022

If you paid state income tax in a different year, it is deductible (if you itemize and subject to the $10K limit) on your federal tax return for the year you actually paid it, e.g. 2022 payments on 2021 state income tax.

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

Deductions & Credits

-Scroll down to:

--Estimates & other taxes paid

  -Other Income taxes

On the next screen, scroll down to:

-Other income taxes paid in 2022

-Balance due on your 2021 state tax paid in 2022. Click the start button and enter your details on the next screen.

Hi there,

 Very Helpful!

I am wondering though if this is where I would enter Q4 payment 2021 paid in 2022 for FEDERAL estimated payment. The way it is worded leads me to think that is is only for STATE estimated payments and not federal. I am only seeing a 2021 paid in 2022 for state and local. However, when I did add the Q4 payment for 2021under FEDERAL WITHHOLDINGS  it adjusted my federal refund amount so I am guessing this is the correct tab to add this.

Thanks in advance
