TurboTax is using the smaller "Sales tax Deduction instead of the larger "State and local income tax deduction after I checked the box. Is this a glitch?

Which box did you check? There are three boxes on the screen.

How do you know that TurboTax is using the smaller amount? What are the two amounts? What is the amount on Schedule A line 5a? Is the box checked to the left of the amount on line 5a?

I am not getting the biggest deduction when checking the box that relates to my higher deduction. I have gone back through several times and it doesn't change.

If you are using the downloaded TurboTax product, you can check which amount is being used by clicking on Forms in the upper right. Click on Schedule A on the left side menu under "Forms in My Return". Line 5a has your state and local taxes and the box just to the left of 5a will be checked if the sales tax deduction is being used. In the example from rjs, selecting either the top or bottom will give the higher deduction.

If you are using the online version of TurboTax, there isn't a way to check Schedule A to be sure which value is being used until you pay for your return. If you have already paid for, but not submitted your return, you can always go back and make any changes necessary before submitting your return for e-filing.
