Question

South Carolina reported I earned money in their state. I don't live in SC, but work for a SC company. On the state return, can I say $0 was earned in SC?

SC only reported earned income for 4 months.  Now they don't take out taxes since they finally fixed their paperwork to realize I don't live in SC.

Yes, as long as you did not perform work in South Carolina, you can state that your South Carolina income was $0.  That will allow you to get a refund of the South Carolina taxes that were withheld in error.

@AnnetteB6 Just double checking; even though I DID work for the SC company (they are still my employer) but didn't actually work or live physically in SC...I can say that the income wasn't earned in SC?  Are you sure that I don't need to get a W2C to fix their error?

Thanks,

Jodie

Yes, getting a W2-C would not fix this because the taxes were actually withheld and remitted to the SC Department of Revenue.

The only way to get your money back that was withheld by mistake is to file a return and state that the income was not earned in SC.  It does not matter that the company is in SC as long as you performed your work somewhere else.
